Welcome to COMM-250 Basic Digital Photography – Fall 2025!
Professor: Alex Sturgill, '08
E-mail: asturgill@leeuniversity.edu
Text: Understanding Exposure, 4th Edition; Peterson – Available on Amazon
Syllabus: COMM-250
Required Equipment: A DSLR or mirrorless camera that is owned personally or borrowed from the school. The camera must have an interchangeable lens and the ability to use all manual settings. Access to the camera's manual is also required.
Assignments:
1.) New assignments will be available each FRIDAY and will be due the following FRIDAY.
2.) Photos should be submitted in the .jpg / .jpeg format only
3.) Photos you submit must include metadata, which comes from the camera when you take a photo. This information includes the settings you used to take the photo such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc. If you use Photoshop, Lightroom, or another program to edit your photos, make sure that your exported photos retain the original metadata.
4.) Photos you submit must be photos that you personally shot this semester. You may go out shooting photos with friends or classmates but you must take and submit your own photos.
A Note From Professor Sturgill:
Hi Class!
I hope you had a great summer! I am excited to interact with each of you this semester as we dive into the fundamentals of digital photography. Please never hesitate to reach out to me via e-mail with any questions, concerns, or issues you may have! I am here for you!
You will have photo assignments and readings from the Peterson text throughout the semester. When you submit photos to Moodle, please make sure they are in the .jpg/.jpeg format only. You may use Photoshop, Lightroom, or another program to edit your photos before submitting, though I will always want to see the metadata associated with your photos. Metadata allows me to see all of the settings you used to take your photos. So if you choose to process your photos, please ensure that the metadata is preserved in your exports. This will help me give you proper feedback.
Lastly, I don't mind you going out and shooting photos in groups, with friends or classmates, but you must always take and submit your own photos.
Let's have a great semester!
