You, Us, and Disney+

When we watch a Disney movie, somewhere between the talking toys, the emotionally conflicted superheroes, animated kingdoms, space rebels, outsized teenage emotions, and insanely ambitious villains there is a serious question: Why do people think, feel, and behave the way they do?

Using the lens of Disney characters and storylines, this Summer Honors course explores a few core ideas from psychology that try to get at that question. Using film clips from some of the most well-known Disney movies, we'll explore topics such as personality development, identity formation, the subconscious, emotional formation, relationships, motivation, and the strange ways people grow, break down, recover, and change.

Along the way, you'll encounter foundational psychological theories and apply them to both fictional characters and real-life experiences. Some days we'll be analytical. Some reflective. And maybe we'll influence the way you think about character development in movies.

No prior background in psychology is required. Bring the curiosity and we'll have a great time!

Welcome to the class.
