116304 - SpclTp CrCul Psychol S Africa (2024/SA:PSYC-480-SA111)

In this immersive and experiential course, students explore the dual forces of desiring happiness and desiring power as pivotal factors shaping the history and contemporary society of South Africa. Through a combination of classroom discussions and on-the-ground experiences, students analyze how these fundamental human motivations have influenced South Africa's development and continue to impact its people and communities.

During a two-week trip to Pretoria, South Africa, students work at an orphan-care foster home, engaging directly with local children and caregivers. This hands-on experience provides a unique perspective on the psychological themes discussed in class. Students visit historical sites, museums, game reserves, and non-profit organizations, gaining a comprehensive understanding of South African culture and history.

Reflecting on their experiences, students critically examine the interplay between the pursuit of happiness and the quest for power in shaping personal and societal outcomes. This course offers a profound opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of psychology through real-world applications and cross-cultural engagement.
